A great way to spend an hour or two on BYU campus. Weekdays during the day and early evening are the best times to visit. If you are any later in the day or visiting on a weekend, try to avoid overlapping with a football or men's basketball game. Check out the cafe upstairs if you are visiting at lunch time.
If you're just looking for a quite place to think, consider heading down the hallway to the education center (just past the bathrooms). There are padded benches away from the crowds.
Check all the doors before leaving. Some are locked, others are not. Staff was well versed in dinosaur knowledge. Temperature was ideal. Free is great. Convenient parking. Now for the art: the art was thought provoking, though soul-chilling in some instances. They won't let you stay after hours though. I think this is due to the paintings coming alive after dark. Or the staff might just need to study. Probably paintings are alive. Very Good overall experience. Full disclose. I stepped over the line. I'm sorry. Please forgive me.
Always worth stopping by to see their new exhibits. Thoughtfully selected pieces with well-written and insightful commentary. If you have the opportunity to take one of their guided tours, DO IT.
Their recent exhibit on LDS art is simply amazing. I spent two hours in that gallery alone. The store is full of all sorts of fascinating objects, little knickknacks you never knew that you wanted, such as "melting unicorn putty kits" and mini ice cream makers. Their permanent art installation is fantastic and I swear I spent half an hour just staring at their main installation, a beautiful rainbow-fabric thingy that stretches across the atrium.
The temporary exhibits are wonderful with great supplemental materials. My personal favorite from the permanent collection, though, is Christ Healing the Sick at the Pool of Bethesda, by Carl Heinrich Bloch.
I enjoy coming to this museum periodically to see the new exhibits. There are spaces for children to explore as well as quiet spots for reflection. I have brought my children since they were very small and the museum is quite accommodating. As a general rule, the exhibits contrast nicely with each other balancing religious art with popular culture and more traditional displays. If you visit infrequently, I suggest checking their website prior to each visit to ensure that they are not between exhibits.
